Jan Rosenow appointed a professor — three months into new role

Jan Rosenow has been conferred the title of Professor of Energy and Climate Policy by Oxford University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Irene Tracey, on the advice of her Senior Appointments Panel.

The appointment comes fewer than three months after Rosenow officially joined Oriel College and Oxford University, but reflects more than two decades of research into the energy transition, electrification and energy demand.

Lord Mendoza, the Provost of Oriel College, commented: “I am absolutely delighted to congratulate Professor Rosenow on this richly deserved recognition.

“His elevation to full Professor in Energy and Climate Policy reflects not only his intellectual leadership and commitment to academic excellence, but also his world-leading impact on one of the most critical issues of our time.”

Rosenow is one of three Jackson Senior Research Fellows at Oriel College. He also heads the Energy research programme at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute (ECI).

He is one of the most-read online voices on the global energy transition with over 80,000 followers on LinkedIn, where he regularly shares his reactions to news stories and research findings.

Rosenow traces his journey back to the small environmental group he founded, inspired by his parents, in his hometown, Lemgo, Germany, when he was eight years old.

Today he oversees a long-running research programme of 30 years at the ECI. The programme has an international reputation for its research on energy demand, which informs policy decisions, market design and technology deployment.

Rosenow said he aspires to create a “better planet for us all”, plus an economy that “does not rely on fossil fuels”.

“When I retire,” he concluded, “I want to look back and be able to say that the work I did together with my colleagues shaped decarbonisation policies around the world.”
